Tribeca Pediatrics

Right after my son was born, I was told by the hospital that I had to choose a pediatrician for him. Since my baby had come three weeks early, I hadn't yet had the opportunity to meet with any pediatricians. I scrambled to find the name and number of a doctor in my area to give them.

Because my son had elevated bilirubin levels, the nurses were concerned about him being jaudiced. The hospital insisted that my son see a doctor within a day of being discharged. I scheduled an appointment for the next day with a pediatrician in Park Slope.

The Pediatrician in Park Slope was obsessed with weight gain. He asked if I was breast or bottle feeding. I told him that I was breatfeeding. When he weighed my son, he found that my son had lost a few ounces since being weighed at the hospital. He was not pleased. He told me that I should start supplementing feedings with either pumped breast milk or infant formula.

Something did not sit right with me about this. I told my boyfriend that I didn't feel comfortable with the doctor and I wanted to look around. He fully supported my decision to do this. I remembered my doula mentioning a pediatrician pratice that she had heard good things about; Tribeca Pediatrics. By the name of the practice I assumed it was in Manhattan, but it was actually on Dean Street between Nevins and 3rd Avenue, very conveininent to where we live.

I scheduled an appointment immediately. My boyfriend, my son and I met with Dr. Mary Ann Tholany. I got a good vibe as soon as she walked through the door. She sat with us in the exam room, which was like a room out of a hippy Brooklyn home, holding my son and talking to us in a relaxed way. She explained that it is quite common for babies to lose a few ounces or even a pound after coming home from the hospital. We didn't need to worry. Any fears about the health of my baby were allayed.

Dr. Tholany has been my son's pediatrician ever since. I have called her many times with copious questions about my son's health. She is always there to listen.

Tribeca Pediatrics has offices in Brooklyn (Park Slope and Williamsburg) and Manhattan (Tribeca).

They have a reliable on call number that connects directly to a practitioner, not a answering service operator. So when you are panicking at 3 o'clock in the morning because your child can't stop vomiting, you can call and speak to a doctor immediately.

I spoken with the other practitioners at Tribeca as well and they all have the same health philosophy; worry when there is cause to worry. Not everything is an emergency. When there is a legitimate problem, they do listen and act accordingly. It is nice to know that my son's health is in good hands.

  1. I must say he seems very happy to be at the doctors which is not always the case for toddlers. Reminds me of how lucky loves to see the vet. I never could figure that out.
